This piece portrays two basic aspects of Indian Classical Dance. The first is Tala (Rhythm) which is portrayed in a dance set to a cyclical 8 beat pattern without the aid of music. The vigorous foot movements highlight the beats that the dancers are conforming to. The second aspect of Grace (Rasa) will be portrayed using Karanas, which are a series of coordinated body movements that define the elegance of Indian Classical Dance. Recently rediscovered, this ancient feature of Bharatanatyam forms the basis for the sculptures seen in temples across India and Indonesia. The piece concludes with the merging of Tala and Rasa in a portrayal of contemporary Indian dance.
