Starting a coal fire requires a good wood fire to begin.

  • How much coal do you think it would take to keep an average sized three bedroom home warm for a season? Right now, we use about five cords of wood. Thanks.

  • @neilvilleneuve It depends on where you live and how your house is designed. A Turn Of The Century Base Heater like my Glenwood is far superior to any modern stove made to burn coal today. A Glenwood No 111 or a Glenwood No 6 like I have would be perfect for your house. Look on the web at, Antique Stove Hospital site or Barstable Stove Shop. Once you experience coal you'll trash the wood stove and never look back.

  • I have a question, can you burn Bituminous coal in a coal furnace?

  • Sure you can, but it requires a different technique than with Anthracite such as you see here. I grew up burning Bituminous coal. To burn it you must have secondary air over the fire to burn off the hydrocarbons when fuel is first added to the fire.

  • Thanks for the response. I will be looking into a Glenwood for sure. I appreciate your response.
