  • Did you figure out what the clicking noise was?

  • @panusjr Yes It was just the valves, I was adjusting them but the valves on the Exhaust side were a little hard to get to so every time I adjusted them they I didnt get them within spec, but I eventually got it! I sold this bike also, i just bought a 2 stroke, KTM 300.

  • also check the timing chain when they wear out they will rub on the oil tube that runs throught the middle of the timing chain just above the bottom timing gear and it will cause a kind of whineing noise just behind the oil pump . one way to check that is to pull the rocker box off and look at the top timing gear with the motor @ t.d.c. and see if the marks on the gear are lined up flat or rotated back counter clockwise flat is normal. timing chains are cheap $45 on ebay gasket is like $20

  • @xr650man Yeah I am sure the timing chain will need to be replaced, more money down the drain!!!

  • the ticking noise , you will hear some valve train noise. you might want to be careful though cause the weak point of this awsome motor is the top eye on the connecting rod, and the only way to really check that is to pull the top end. look at your oil really close , look for bronze'ish colored flakes in your oil , i pulled mine and mic'ed it and it was out of spec . so i had to replace my rod , look up xr650r warthog on youtube it'll show you what happens.Grenade!

  • @xr650man Damn, I really didn't want to open her up just yet. But I may just end up opening her up sometime this week. Thanks for the help. I looked for the warthog video, but couldn't find it.

  • Your idle issue is a vacuum leak. Your valve ticking is not that bad. Adjust the valves to spec. Slappy valves are happy valves. Check your carburetor diaphragms and the intake boot to fix your idle.

  • It's the timing chain it's worn out!

  • Very common mistake!Bring the piston to to T.D.C. then slowly push the kick starter

until you hear the auto compression release make a loud click then set your valves

to .006 on the intake and .008 on the exhaust.

  • Yup the valves need to be ajusted

  • Same thing with my dads xr600r I just put new rings on the piston because it was starting to burn oil, and now I gotta do the valve clearance because there's a little ticking noise

  • hey big ray just saw your memorial day video, thanks for your service, its people like you and your friends that you served with that make this country great, you keep us safe. thanks man you guys are awsome!

  • you sound like a pretty good mechanical guy , this stuff is actually pretty easy .just follow the manual , buy the parts on ebay its the cheapest , im not saying that the rod is the problem, its just common with these motors when they get alot of time and or neglect . i would take it to a honda mechanic in your area and they should be able to diagnose it .they usually have tricks to diagnose rod issues .i was just giving you possabilities of what it could be.hopefully its nothing,

    good luck

  • im not saying that is your problem, its an old bike ,and i dont like riding grenades, and sometimes its better to use some caution especially when you see alot of parts sellers on ebay that dont include the crank or the cases because they exploded their motors.they dont make this bike any more and i would hate to see another one bite the dust . well if you pull it down and its ok at least your only out the price of the gasket set and some oil, and change that timing chain while your in there.
