An excerpt of Elie During, PhD introducing the topic for a panel discussion entitled: Beyond the Brain: The Experiential Implications of Neurotheology.

Part of a Nour Foundation panel discussion at the September 11, 2008 United Nations symposium, "Beyond the Mind-Body Problem: New Paradigms in the Science of Consciousness," inspired by the philosophy of Ostad Elahi.

  • Cartesianism Revisted: The Ghost in the Moving Body or the Lived Body C. Varela

He seems to be saying its almost impossible for the mind to understand itself, but is the problem of reflectivity merely a problem of mind and body? Or is it merely a positivist fallacy?

  • I don't believe in this stuff. Seems like an overly complex explanation in a world where we have machines that are more and more capable of doing what we do (still a good way from there, but they can still "think" in ways that they were hardcoded to do).

However, these people have my attention. They seem to be professionals (and I say seem, I'm not qualified to know if they are). They may stumble on something, either proof for or against their idea.

  • But your mind seems to be able to travel and move across vast distances through the medium of the Internet. What does this mean?

It means you are asking a computer to send electric impulses on the web and fetch data back to you. That you travel through the Cyberspace is an illusion. You don't implement TCP/IP, your computer software does.

  • Your mind is non-physical and your body is physical. Two different types of learning, two ways of experiencing reality. A short example- Where is the non-physical reality of Cyberspace? Your body never really moves (putting aside your typing fingers) while you are sitting in your chair and looking at the computer screen. But your mind seems to be able to travel and move across vast distances through the medium of the Internet. What does this mean?
