This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2.
I-Ninja is an action platformer where you play as a super deformed ninja. Most people will instantly be turned off by the look of the game, but don't be fooled by that first impression, this game packs a punch in the gameplay department. It's extremely solid, and is definitely worth a look from platformer fans.
You can tell instantaneously that the game doesn't take itself serious. You're a goofy looking super deformed ninja who makes smart ass comments. The game has this thing forgotten by gaming lately called humor, and has a lighthearted feel to it.
However, tiny ninjas, and humor aside, don't let that fool you into thinking that this game is a kids game, or an easy game for that matter. This game can be extremely challenging at times. It will test even the most skilled gamers out there. It's humorous, and lighthearted, but not a sissy game.
There is also a lot of variety to it's gameplay. Each level seems to do something different. Sure you've got your straightforward platformer levels, but you've also got, for lack of a better word, mini-game like levels that give the game more variety (including one where you're a giant robot fighting another giant robot that plays like punchout) . However, some of those mini game levels can be extremely challenging (there's a level where you have to roll a giant ball through an area on narrow ledges that had me cursing up a storm).
And that's going to be the biggest turn-off to some gamers, this game is tough, and is not for the faint of heart. This requires oldschool patience which isn't something I can't say often about newer games. The camera can also occasionally be a pain, but luckily you can fix it on the fly.
Those are really the only two complaints I could find about his game. It controls like a dream. From the platform jumps, wall runs, and the whole multitude of moves you can preform in this game to the action-game feeling sword play, the game's controls are smooth.
Even the graphics whores out there will have a hard time faulting it. Sure, they're not the best graphics on the PS2, but there also extremely solid.
Overall, I-Ninja is a great playing, humorous, challenging, charming platformer with a lot of variety. It's solid on all fronts and is just all around a great game.
I-Ninja is also available on the PC, Gamecube, and the Xbox (and is backwards compatible on the 360).
Note: this is far from a perfect playthough, but my job is to get people's attention in these vids, not to show off a super skillful run of the game
