Major socio-political changes are taking place in communist-ruled China, opening up strong possibilities for the growth of democracy and citizens' rights in the coming years. However, China is not going to imitate the Western model of democracy. Rather, it is proactively exploring its own model of democracy based on the nation's rich cultural and philosophical traditions, such as the teachings of Confucius.
This was the thrust of an illuminating talk by Shri Ravi Bhoothalingam, a noted China expert, at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), Mumbai on July 20th, 2010. He was speaking to a full house on 'China 2020: A Confucian Democracy?' The function was presided over by Shri D.P. Tripathi, National General Secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party, who has been promoting the cause of closer India-China ties for many years.

@HanChinese1 in an western liberal democracy like america if you are the 60% then you can make the other 40% suffer. and all of the government policies will be short sighted because they might not be here few years later and the people succeeding them might be a different political party. in an Confucian democracy where top power is chosen by Meritocracy that central government will make more balanced decisions and it will have a MUCH far sighted goals that will benefit now and future.

@HanChinese1 at the moment in USA 2012 elections Republican gop Ron Paul is the only person who can save the US economic mess, his goals are achievable because it involves defense cuts and to end the american world police duty. but at the moment in the Republican race Newt Gingerch is winning and he is advocating establishing a moon base in the next 10 yearsand do nothing to change the status quo in america. in an Confucian democracy Ron Paul will be presedent because he meets all the criteria

@HanChinese1 meanwhile there will be an independent judiciary system who will punish any form of corruption severely. in this kind of Confucian democracy there are no possibility of the uninformed public choosing an incompetent leader who will on drag the country into misery. it also eliminated the possibility of the influential few to direct public opinion in their own interest.

@HanChinese1 the candidate pool for promotion to the central government will be selected from top performing provincial leaders who has a clean record and proven to be politically morally competent. after a selection of cabinet has been decided by the independent scholars then and opposite house of Representative will be formed its members will be people who has won popular elections for the seats and their jobs will be forwarding people's desire to the central government.

@HanChinese1 what China needs is to establish an system of popular election in township city and provincial level. while the central government is made up of promotions of morally politically and intellectually fit for governing by Confucian Meritocracy, the candidates of central government is chosen by an group of independent scholars economists and political analysts the best canidate who has the best understanding of Confucian morality, economics and politics will be chosen for presidency.

@HanChinese1 western modern governing system came to being through revolutions because the west have this rigid class system that dont allow the peasants to have any chance to meet their potentials thats why revolutions happen in the west NOT confucian societies because in a true confucian society there is NO class system. wat u r saying is to force western ideology on China eventhough the two can not possibly be more different.

@HanChinese1 absolutely bullshit.in western absolute monarchies the society is divided by extinct classes, if you are a peasant you and your son and the generation after that will ALWAYS BE peasants, no matter how much money you make its ONLY the house of lords and the King who has the power. that means you either have tobe an aristocracy or the son of the king to have any chance of having a say in the government.

@obsidianstatue Even if you became a top official in china, the emperor still has the power of life and death over you. Yes emperor can kill you at will. What is there to limit the power of the emperor: Absolutely Nothing. In west Only God has the power of life and death over the people. that is why from early on Western Monarchs had limit on their power. The catholic Church was NOT under control of the state. Therefore it was much easier to form a constitutional government.

@obsidianstatue It is not just that emperors are incompetent, it is that system of government created based on confucianism Garanteed the government and emperor would be incompetent, with absolute power, the brutal struggle for power is inevitable. We never influence the west, but we were influenced by the West. Look at our textbooks in any subject except Chinese. you will find 99% of things came from the west.
