Tips for hiking safely in Tahoe in the wintertime: 1: Carry a protein bar and thermos with hot liquid like green tea 2: Wear lots of layers: Snowsuit, thermals, T-shirt, down jacket, etc. 3: Know your trails and be aware that the snow may be deeper than you think 4: Have a cell phone with you and charged in case you get in trouble.

  • Thanks for the great tips! I have gotten way off trail without snow just not paying attention to the blazes and cairns since I was looking at the scenery....can't imagine how it would have been in the snow. Also, I lost feeling in my toes climbing early yesterday when I hadn't checked that a cold front was coming in, got out in Vibram Fivefingers, and stepped in a puddle in the dark.

  • Great video Jack! Nice dog you have there too. That area must be so beautiful to go and hike in!

  • i brew my tea in a glass lined thermos, that way it stays hot for hours.

  • Good information, always stay on a marked trail... And watch out for ice!

  • It's not uncommon for inexperienced hikers to get lost on the trails. It can become deadly if hikers aren't prepared for the winter weather. Good advice - stay on the marked trail and you should always be able to find your way back home. Also remember to bring food and water for your dog, too...
