During this Communion meditation, and as this Mass as well as the existence of this wonderful church draw nearer to a close, the choir sings The Bells of St. Mary's.
The song was made popular by Bing Crosby in the 1945 movie of the same name. The movie was a story of a priest and a nun at a school called St. Mary's and the two work together to, coincidentally, save the school from closing.
Sitting in the church as the choir sang this song was probably when I got choked up the most. While I've been a parishoner at the church a few blocks away (where my husband grew up and our children attended school), St. Mary's would always be my home. It's were I attended school, grew up, and received all the Sacraments. It was not Midnight Mass unless I went to St. Mary's. It's the parish my mother and all her siblings went to school as did a number of their children and recieved many of the Sacraments. It's the parish that my grandparents were among the founding parishoners.
I AM A BELIEVER

The name of my church is St. Mary's, and all my important memories from childhood through now are closely linked to that wonderful place. I can't imagine the sorrow your parishoners felt during this sad and poignant rendition. We never truly appreciate what we have until it's gone. God's blessings to all from your late parish, may he help mend your broken hearts and help you find happiness in your new parish home.
