In an era of great hurdlers Golden Cygnet was about to become a legend.

@shalakhani This was the death of a superstar! He was about to humiliate every serious Champion Hurdle contender this side of the Irish sea. This fall still sickens me to watch, but the way he cruises up to Night Nurse "on the bit" is frightening! and as previously stated he is still only a novice.
Golden Cygnet for me, was and still is the best hurdler i ever saw.
His name is not on many big race lists of winners, but had he lived, we all know that would not have remained so.
RIP Champ.

Legend of a horse, toying with giants of the turf and still a novice.

i do know what ur saying ,but i don't think he would have had to have come fully off the bit to win this, so allowing for golden cygnet not finding a huge amount when push came to shove i would say he would have "at least" won by 3-4 lengths.. maybe 6-8 lenghts at most as he was contesting a much hotter race this time .. once again tho...
r.i.p
golden cygnet!!

I disagree about Gloria Victis being compared to Golden Cygnet. GV was a good horse & what happened was tragic (looked at being no better than 3rd in a well below par Gold Cup prior fall) but a potential great horse? Highly unlikely!
GC was here mixing it with some of the best of all time, albeit at the end of a hard season for them. A certain future star!

Seeing Golden Cygnet fall at that hurdle still sickens me beyond words. I hate to see any horse injured or suffer an even worse fate when jumping hurdles and fences. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I prefer the flat to jumping.

You certainly know your stuff, arkleno1 ,
and ,of course, you're absolutely right, in my opinion.
-
The greatest potential of any hurdler I've ever seen. Had Night Nurse et al at full stretch before coming to grief .

Whilst if I was running an in-running book on this race I would have had GC favourite when he fell, you can never be certain about these things. How often does a horse look to be travelling best of all, indeed galloping all over the rest, and then finds next to nothing when push comes to shove? Think Harchibald, for example. I'm not suggesting that Harchibald warrants comparison with Golden Cygnet, but you get my point.

I agree.
An absolute tragedy we lost this horse so prematurely. What a talent, i feel sure he was exceptional, he was cruising over this lot in a golden era of great hurdlers! I remember a conversation with Mr Arthur Stephenson in the 80's and he said the useless ones fall regularly and know how to fall, the good ones don't know how to fall! which made me laugh at the time, but it's a sad and accurate point here!

Too true. Everything pointed towards future greatness. As you say this was the golden era and he was about to run away from them when he fell. Also won the Supreme Novices' at Cheltenham in a time that was 2 secs faster than the Champion Hurdle which was run a little over one hour later. The evidence only points in one direction!

dont forget that sea pigeon had a very hard
race in the champion hurdle and was probably
a little below his best here.and overall he was about 10ibs better in the next 2 years

You have a point there Cheesebody. However, at the end of the season, Timeform rated Sea Pigeon 175 and Golden Cygnet 176, and to quote from their annual 'The connections of Sea Pigeon did not dispute the general feeling that Golden Cygnet would have beaten Sea Pigeon in the Scottish Champion Hurdle if he had not come to grief at the last.' Yes, Sea Pigeon did improve over the next 2 years but Golden Cygnet's potential for improvement was massive. Like you said earlier, we will never know.

I second that if you have the full race please post it Golden Cygnet was the last of what could have been true GIANTS of hurdlers what a tragedy and almost 30 yrs on that fall is still as painful to watch as it was on tv all them years ago.

I'm afraid that what you saw is all I have. Happened to catch it on TV one day. Was described as 'very rare footage' which had never been seen in Ireland before and wasn't shown 'live' on the day either. An absolute tragedy that he died as he would have been GREAT. The race, as it is now, was a handicap and despite being a 'novice' he was only receiving a pound off Sea Pigeon and was giving weight to Night Nurse. What a talent he was!
