I rode Amtrak a few years ago taking the California Zephyr over Soldier Summit in Utah between Provo and Helper. The train was rather late so we hit that section in daylight. I was lucky that the car attendant was still asleep.

I was able to stand in the vestibule with the window open most of the way over the hill until we started down into Helper. At that point the attendant caught me with my camera stuck out the window.

He was pretty cool about it, I said, "at least I wasn't smoking down here."

This video is from a WMV source, it's 24 minutes and only 62 Megabytes so I don't expect the quality to be very good. At least you get the idea. Enjoy.

(btw, this is the old Denver & Rio Grande Western route, the Union Pacific route goes east out of Salt Lake City, up Weber Canyon and into Wyoming. This route continues on through Price, Utah to Green River, UT, then into Colorado over the Rockies to Denver.)

  • yeah, I don't specifically recall but it was very cold! I wish I had this in better quality, I couldn't piece together the original footage and had to upload a wmv file. Thanks.

  • Gorgeous scenery! Do you remember what time of the year it was? There's plenty of snow on the ground so I'm assuming winter.

  • NICE!
