Do raised air intakes work and protect a vehicle'e engine against dust. A real test in the real world. You decide!

  • you tapped the dusty tires

  • which made the dust leap out and jump into the filter? Your point is?

  • which went on top of the white rag and made the filter look dusty.

  • Believe me, this was no set-up and nobody was paid. The filter without the raised intake poured out sand. The one with the intake, there was but light dust. But judge for yourself.

  • This whole thing does not prove anything (as you stated you were in the lead most of the time) unless you drive behind him and redo the test. If you are in the lead there is no vehicle kicking up a ton of dust in front of you causing your intake to suck it in. Dust goes a lot higher than your snorkel and it would suck in plenty if you were not in the lead.

  • ich vehicle had the snorkel because i liked it

  • We get about a 6% increase in millage with the snorkel. Measured on the same 5hr drive in similar weather with a very similar load in the petrol Prado, same tire pressure (42psi) at mostly highway speeds -110 and 100 kph for most of the trip.

Reversing the head of the snorkel reduces efficiency on the same trip by around 7%. Not really scientific but significant.

In suburban traffic (60kph max) it makes less than 2%, presumably just experimental noise, so I'm saying no discernible difference.
