The first movement of Jean (Janne) Sibelius's masterpiece violin concerto in its original, unedited incarnation.

This is the ONLY recording of the unrevised version, performed with special permission by Leonidas Kavakos.

For part B: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4jW6bCERqo

Note: I tried not to be too obnoxious in the choice or number of images. I didn't have a whole lot of time, but I chose a few images that I think embody the piece well.

  • OMB thnks for the fwd - certainly v interesting. as per some of the other commentators i agree seems to be "fat free" ie somehwat lighter. also does seem to meander a bit and lack direction

  • Thanks for sharing this..enjoyed listening to it very much!

  • i hate to break it to you but im a cheap bastard

btw this is on limewire tho if you look hard enough you'll find it

  • I'm not Him!I wish i was!I just think that masterpieces like this and especially in classical music (that doesnt "sell" so much) we ought to buy the good discs!

  • Self advertisement ... huh huh.

I have to give you my thanks for being able to bring us the original version. It is really a symphonic poem featuring a solo vioiln. It is beautiful!

In my opinion the "nationalism" aspect of this piece shows up much more clearly in this version. I could almost see the anguish of the Finnish people with this piece, much more so than "Finlandia".

  • Hmm, I like parts of this even better than the revised edition. It's much lighter in character, though.

  • buy the record for god's shake!I think the whole 1st movement is more than enough....

  • also, i think this version makes Sibelius sound like he doesn't know where hes going with the piece. so many ideas.

  • im sure many violinists prefer the second because that's what we grew up learning. but what if we had not and this was Sibelius concerto. I really how popular it would have been, or not so popular maybe. who knows. this is very interesting.
