Subject: Resignation of membership in LDS church

MAIL TO:
Member Records Division, LDS Church

[SAMPLE RESIGNATION LETTER]

My full name is ______; my date of birth is ____________ .
[I was baptized on ___(date). My membership number is ______.] My residence address is _______ [in the________ward/branch].
I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, effective immediately, and request you to remove my name permanently from your membership records. I wish no further contact from representatives of your church except to confirm that my name has been removed from your records. I expect to receive that confirmation within a reasonably short time.

FAQ:

1. How long does it usually take?

The process should only take 45-50 days.

Remember that once they receive your letter of resignation you are officially not a member of the LDS church. E-mail might not be the same way legally, but it is certainly much more convenient.

2. Is there any benefit to officially resigning from the church?

The benefits are mostly just emotional. Removing your name from an organization that you strongly disagree with can be very therapeutic. Of course, the church often tries to use their church membership numbers to impress people with it's growth. Removing your name limits this tool for them (if indeed they are honest in publicly declaring membership numbers- and after studying the few numbers that ARE public, it is possible that the church is not completely up front about the numbers).

They also hold records on you and will send missionaries and church members to you in some cases. Resigning should solve this nuisance.

3. Let me know if there are other questions and we will try to keep this updated. This website is quite comprehensive with regards to more details about resignation:

  • @Simoncanada No, the mormon church keeps you on record and likes to show off its 14 million "members" that 2/3 members dont even attend the mormon church or believe in it.

If you resign you become an ex-member and not part of that number they use for propaganda

  • I don't understand, how come you have to resign? Is it not like any other church in which you can just stop attending?

  • When my father left the church,he was bombarded with hatred from former church friends.

My father is a clinical psychologist,is deeply kind,accepting,non-judgmental and is just a great guy.

These people who once called my father a close friend, treated him as though he was a criminal.

It didn't hurt him,as he expected such treatment, but it opened my eyes even further to the controlling nature of the church.

I'm now free of the church, and I'm pretty freaking happy:)

  • Thanks for the video, I agree whole heartedly.

  • I like the dancing part XD!
