"La Orquesta Suprema" began as a young, hip, 11-piece 1970's Latin band of teens from New York City. Hailing from the five gritty boroughs of the concrete jungle, This was no slick "salsa" candy of the day that this group was serving. At a time when most hispanic artists were trying to decide what side of the "Latin-Rock" fence to sit on, Suprema was inventing Rock-Latin. For years, this pioneering band was a cooperative effort nurtured by the Fonfrias brothers, Jose "Sonny" (piano), and John "JB" (bass). The distinctive background vocals, or "coro" were handled by the Vargas brothers, Max (clave) and Charlie (maracas). Rounding out the vocal department, were several lead singers, most notably, Leo Rosado. The incredible John Osorio, pounded fierce afro-cuban rythms on the congas drums, and was co-author on some of the band's compositions. The multi-talented Teddy Acosta was always slick, a joy to watch on timbales. Holding down the tempo on bongos and cowbell, was Alberto "Chickie" Vasquez, later substituted by "Junie". The brass section, a two-trombone assault comprising of Orlando and Jerry (later, Willie) gave La Suprema that old-school New York City boogaloo vibe. On guitar and cuatro, rocking with abandon, was Suprema's secret weapon, Eddie Goicuria. Displaying true comeraderie, everyone in the group contributed to the arrangements, and each member brought their own unique personality and style into the mix, giving Orquesta Suprema it's own unmistakable and identifiable look and sound. In it's heyday, La Suprema blazed through the clubs, block parties, colleges, and venues of the time, taking no prisoners, leaving no doubt. Thirty-something years later, the members remain in contact online, and though various ventures, festering rumors of a surprise-attack reunion someday in the future. Watch the skies...........

Like yourself, I would also enjoy having an LP or CD of this band. Lamentably my friend La Orq Suprema was only together for a few years, it never entered a recording studio. The above video only exists because one of the band members was studying filmmaking at BCC and it was an assignment. I'm grateful for this because it gives me a place to go and hear the songs again. My thanks go out to Brontis for posting it here, and for the very nice descriptive text accompanying it.
