What are Khap Panchayat? (Hindi)

Khap Panchayats, most common in Haryana, are community groups of elderly men that set the rules for all aspects of life in an area of one or more villages. Khap Panchayats have attracted recent attention due to the harsh penalties and punishments they have inflicted on community members who break KP rules. For example, KP have sentenced to death young couples entering into "love marriages" or marrying those from a different gotra (clan).
