UPDATE: (8/05/2008) Thanks to the recent trophy patch the game now has blood. The patch is dependent on the game's region as opposed to the region of the system. So a Us copy played on a Japanese system will now have blood after the update. I simply deleted my current save file, updated the game and started it up. Viola! Blood. This was a rather nice side effect of the added trophy support.

Update: (12/14/2007) User enjirube was kind enough to pass on a workaround to enable blood. It's not the easiest or most practical, but it's appreciated none the less! I cannot personally confrim this as I know no one local with a Us/Uk PS3. The following is the workaround, in his own words.

"Take your hardrive out (or buy a new one) after backing up your saves, videos, whatever. Then the hard part is you need to know someone with a US/UK ps3. You put the HDD in the US/UK ps3 format it, this effectively makes ur japanese ps3 a US/UK ps3 and as such the blood will be unlocked. 100% working and tested. Hope you know someone who will let you format a drive on their ps3!!" -enjirube

Info: I've updated the video to include a better explanation and hopefully provide better information. This is largely the same video only with some text deleted and other text added. After numerous negative comments relating to the mistake, which was acknowledged in the video's description, I've removed the original version of this video.

A little known quirk with the Japanese Ps3 is that it will "censor" some games regardless of which region the actual disc is. Much like the AES before it, the hardware's region determines which "Version" of the game you'll get. Only, back then, if you wanted blood you had to grab a Japanese system. With the Ps3 it is apparently the other way around.

This was first noticed on Resistance: Fall of Man. When a Us copy is played on Japanese hardware all blood is removed. There was a fix for this and it was quite simple. Just download a Us save file and the blood will be restored.

This fix does *NOT* work for Uncharted. The game creates a different save folder depending on which hardware you are using. The game will not recognize a US save file when played on Japanese hardware.

This video attempts to show how the game is changed when played on Japanese hardware. I am unaware of any other major differences besides the usual switching of X and Circle. The game is still fully English.

Also, the language options only allow for English and Japanese. I cannot confirm it, but I have heard you are given more choices when played on Us(and maybe other region) hardware.

Some things to note. My parental controls are off. This is a Us copy of the game purchased at Circuit City. The hardware is a 60gb Japanese Ps3. I do not have access to a Us Ps3 and as such cannot provide video of what the game is supposed to look like.

If anyone finds out a way to restore the blood, please leave a comment letting me know.

  • WHAT, i'm playing this shit on a jap ps3 right now and it has all the blood and shit and the screen turns red when you get hit, your ps3 must be broken or something

  • Or maybe you could, I don't know, read the description for the video in which I state that the recent trophy update restores blood?

  • either way, i dont understand the logic behind hardware cenzoring blood and the hit direction marking (making the game kinda broken), i mean, how does the hardware know what to do? and knowing japan (child porn videogames and other sick shit that's sometimes even illegal to import to US) this is kinda surprising too

  • It's not nessecarily "censoring" the game. For some games, all versions of the game are on the disc. Your hardware determines which version of the game is loaded. Resistance is another game. Try playing the Us version on a Japanese system and the blood will be removed. The way around that is to have a Us save file.

Unlike in the past, violent content in Japanese games is much more loked down upon. With the advent of the CERO ratings, many games are toned down for Japan.

  • Especially when concerning violence to Humans. Decapitations and the like are generally removed from games these days. Take a look at Resident Evil/BioHazard. It started out being censored in the Us, but now the Japanese versions get censored.

As for why you had blood without the update, I cannot say. Are you sure you have a Japanese system and not an Asian system? The game is only missing blood on the Japanese hardware.

  • yes it sucks that there's no blood in the japanese version of uncharted, us americans love our blody games, i guess the japanese don't, and yes, cencorship sucks...

i am seriously awaiting uncharteds sequel, hopefully you'll be about to carry more than 2 weapons, 3 would be ok with me, but not anymore,

  • We get censored Animes, they take censored games.

    Uuuuh sounds fair...

  • i dont have blood eather

  • sooooo wats the point of this?

  • I just played through the American version of the game on my American PS3 and didn't really notice the blood... Weird.

  • You have a US version of the game playing on a Japanese PS3 right? Does a Japanese language option pop up if you put it in? Or how 'bout if you set the PS3's language to Japanese? Asking this since I think it would be cool to try this game in Japanese.

  • There are games with decapitation these days. At least by my observation. and if not there is a lot of blood.

  • You get online(sign in) and go into the game. It comes up.

  • how can i get the update for trophies?

  • Well, at least GTA4 and Call of Duty 4 didn't get censored in Japan. they left it uncut, but this is odd for Sony to censor this game in Japan. I think I recalled Japan has a lot of violent media like anime, manga, and video game. So why censor this if Japan makes a lot of violent stuff.

  • i'm so disapointed in japan

first the us, than germany and australia, and now japan doing this shit
