@luvs2shop1121 The major theme is knowing and being who you are, and thus gaining the ability to be truly close with another person. The song relates how life (television, relationships, where we live etc.) keeps one from self-discovery. The only way the subject can be 'closer to me' (I would guess both companionship and emotional maturity are implied) is through leaving behind what interferes. This is only a beginning to understanding the song, as it is too complicated for a 450 char post.

Dar Williams is just incredibly good. She's the best alternative country artist I have learned of since Patty Griffin...and I gather that she has been around for longer.
Now, please do a video illustration of 'What Do You Hear in These Sounds?' or I will myself...and I'm afraid that it wouldn't be nearly as good.

I love that song! Ill try to get around to it, I'm in the middle of another request for a New Model Army song called "Ballad." After, when I get a chance, I'll try to do that song.
