Thousands cornered by advancing Sri Lankan army - 28 Jan 09

Sri Lanka's military says it is close to ending the war on the Tamil Tigers but as fighting intensifies, thousands of civilians are being pushed into an area the army has declared as a safe zone.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports from the town of Mullaitivu, the last Tamil Tiger stronghold to fall.

LTTE is a terrorist organization proscribed by many countries including the UK . They are cornered and under pressure and the solution to the current situation is the LTTE laying down arms and allowing civilians to freely move and for political process begin.

We have received an interesting briefing from Sir John Holmes. The IDP situation in transit camps are not as concerning as once feared. The problem is those trapped by the LTTE.

How did this whole mess get started anyway?

The best news I've found is that Sri Lankans with close ties to India were taking too many liberties away from Sri Lankans of Tamil ancestry, thus the animus built up to a war.

The presumption in the things I've read is that Tamils are more or less rejected out of hand by Indans, so the non-Tamil Sri Lankans are able to leverage that to gain an advantage, and it is surmised that this caused hostilities.
