In this video I talk about some of the common mistakes many DIY TV repairmen make when trying to repair their own TVs. Listed below are some great resources for anyone desiring to improve their troubleshooting skills.
Troubleshooting & Repairing LCD TVs by John Preher at
http://davestv.jptv97501lcd.click2sell.eu
For someone new to electronics the first few pages of this book may be a bit challenging but the majority of this book is easy reading with lots of pictures, diagrams, and useful troubleshooting techniques. This book covers the general theory of LCD TVs and many useful troubleshooting techniques. The most important points I learned from Johns book are the main test points and their approximate voltages.

How to troubleshoot and repair Switch Mode Power supplies by Jestine Yong at http://davestv.jestinemichellepow.click2sell.eu This is a 271 page ebook packed with helpful information on how to troubleshoot switch mode power supplies which are found in many kinds of electronic equipment. I have many books and videos on this kind of power supply but this is by far the best of my collection.

Testing electronic components and finding unknown resistor values by Jestine Yong. http://5d8388ioop4nfm862d1b0u7sbj.hop.clickbank.net/
I have not yet read Jestines book on Testing electronic components but I was told it's a good one for a person just starting out in electronic troubleshooting.

How to repair LCD Computer Monitors by Jestine Yong at
http://davestv.jestinewilliamlcd.click2sell.eu
Even though this book was about computer monitor repair I found most of the troubleshooting techniques he demonstrates also applied to LCD TV repair so I was glad to have read it. Much like the book on Switch Mode Power Supplies it was easy to read and similar to Johns Prehers book on LCD repair. It had lots of pictures and good troubleshooting techniques.

Mikes TV case histories The latest paperback edition has 1177 case histories on LCD, CRT, Plasma and Projection TVs. at http://www.mikestvtips.com/ 1-410-272-4984
When I first started in the TV repair business and my troubleshooting skills were not that great often times Mike's case histories told me exactly which parts I needed to replace and it often saved me from having to purchase a great many schematics. I have been using his case histories since 1995 and I would not be with out them. If you call him please be considerate of his time zone and call between 11:00 AM TO 8:PM Eastern time only.

John Prehers LCD TV case histories at
http://davestv.jptv97501lcd1.click2sell.eu
This ebook has 56 case histories on nothing but LCD TVs
and which parts he replaced to get them going. I found this ebook was helpful in better understanding the connection between certain symptoms and their causes. Right now it's only 10 dollars.

  • What's the make/model of that ESR tester you have in the video. You probably mentioned it in earlier comments but I'm not searching for it ;-)

  • @rhblakeman My cap tester is the cap 88 made by electronic design specialists. The cap wizard may be a better choice. The blue ESR is also suppose to be a good choice.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Hi. Are you going to do any videos on CRT TV repair?

  • @TehUberCyberBeast I thought about doing some videos on CRT TVs, but considering they are being phased out I figured it would be best to stick with the newer sets.

  • hey i love your videos!...i have a blown capacitor but i cant find it is a cd293 220uf 450v and it says 25/085/21!...do you kno were i could find it??....

  • @xxsurcentralxx @xxsurcentralxx I don't know what the cd293 stands for but the other numbers are what you need to be concerned with. Digikey should sell a capacitor of this value.

  • I have a question for you relating to fixing some v-e-r-y expensive electronic equipment, and it seems like you may be a good person to ask. Can you send me a Youtube message regarding this? And then I'll go into more detail..Thanks for your time!!

  • People in America still repair televisions? Very informative and useful.

  • @rhblakeman THANKS I REALLY APPRECIATED!....

  • @xxsurcentralxx CD293 is just a type designation by Sancon China for a can type radial lead aluminum electrolytic. It's only an 85C rated line, you should get a 105C replacement. As Dave mentioned the 220uF 450V is your main consideration and you may want to measure your present one in mm and get one about the same size. Panasonic, United Chemicon and some others are better replacements and are usually low ESR. Digikey has all the specs and you can choose to ship by USPS.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Thanks Dave

  • @TehUberCyberBeast Only the few remaining that specialize in retro, antique, etc repairs are the ones making money. Not enough units left to keep lots of shops going full time with CRT based repairs and parts, as I mentioned, are getting hard to find. Besides you can connect a game console to a new LCD TV as easily as you can to an old CRT TV. Only problems are in connection of mono, CGA and EGA to new monitors or TVs.

  • @TehUberCyberBeast With the CRTs many shops have closed and gone out of business not transitioning into LCD, plasma and projection. Some CRT sets have a problem with lack of available parts like flybacks, proprietary chips, etc. I gave up on CRT monitors and TVs 10 yrs ago and sold my high voltage stuff and focused on the PC, laptop and printer repairs and occasional TV and monitor repair. Even LCD monitors aren't worth repairing when parts and labor exceeds cost for replacing
