    I will say this. The Irish were looked down upon and needed not to apply. The men ended up on police forces and fire departments, and the women ended up as teachers. And they ended up beating the prejudice against them, but they're white. Italians ended up, for the most part, beating the prejudice against them, but most consider them to be white. The same with Jews. I'll also say there are Appalachian whites who just can't seem to make it.
