Since 1.2, you cannot type the § in Minecraft. However, you can copy it and paste into MC with ctrl+v. You can use this for world titles and stuff, but it will not let you paste it into the chat. So this is really only useful for naming worlds with colored text, making the server speak colored text, or playing on older servers (which some people do, mostly 1.7 beta).
This tutorial shows you how to type colored text and the crazy, moving letters in Minecraft on your Mac. This involves NO mods/hacks.
It's § + a hex digit or "k". You can type § with alt+6 on a Mac.
A few colors I remember off the top of my head:
§1 = blue
§4 = red
§6 = orange
§0 = black
§F = normal white, but you can type /kill like this and not die
§A = green
§k = scrambled, moving letters like at the end of the game
WARNING: Many server owners are ignorant and will ban you if you use colored text, thinking you are a hacker. Use with caution. Then again, most servers where they ban you for this are horrible anyway.
WARNING #2: Stupid comments are against the rules. You will be blocked and your comment removed.
