This is a little preview I put together for the 1971 made-for-TV movie "Earth II" (not to be confused with the network TV series "Earth 2"). In this movie a large orbiting space station declares itself an independent nation.

Aside from clothing and hair styles, this movie has held up pretty well. They got good science and technical advice, and the laws of physics don't change from decade to decade.

This movie is now available on DVD. I got mine at Deep Discount.

  • You make an interesting point. I myself enjoy writing short sf stories set in O'Neill-type space habitats. But it can be a challenge coming up with interesting plots in such an idyllic setting.

  • You bet.

  • Yeah, it's considerably more realistc, for one thing.

  • I had mentioned getting mine at Deep Discount. There's also a page for it on the Warner Brothers website (wbshop).

  • Saw this several times while at home sick.

  • @theironclads The first colony on the Moon could be called Earth III. Or, alternately, just "Alpha".

  • @cmsahe Introducing new visitors/inhabitants to Earth 2 would provide plots for a time.Eventually though it would become formulaic & repetitive though. Even the Love Boat sailed to different ports. The space station would have only orbited the Earth,it was not capable of exploration at all. Perhaps the show would have included exploration of our solar system via spaceships working out of Earth 2,maybe there were even colonies on the moon as well as Mars. This could offer material for more plots.

  • @theironclads Just like The Love Boat did, every week a shuttle full of passengers :)

  • Thank you for uploading this trailer. This takes me back to my childhood. I remember seeing it then and never again. for forty years I have have remembered the little boy playing with a little bubble in his hand;)

  • I saw this when it first aired 40 years ago. I own it on DVD, and I enjoy it. But, it's got some uber physics, engineering and even medical whopper-bombs in it. Even so, it's not worse in that way than most TV sci-fi.

  • While I greatly enjoyed this TV-movie/pilot,I'm wondering just how the producers & writers would have handled Earth II as a weekly series? Once the newness of the show wore off & we became used to the terrific sets & models, where would they go every episode with this premise? How fresh & interesting could they keep it week in & week out?

  • How cool ! I remember this when I was a kid and always thought about it .

Thanks for posting this and update on the DVD release ! :)
