In 1964 Decca signed The Presidents up and prepared to release their single Candy Man, produced by Glyn Johns. At the last minute Decca passed the song to Brian Poole and The Tremeloes who released it forcing The Presidents to make it a B side to their first single. Oh what might have happened if all had been fair.

  • The story has to be told - call it sour grapes - but here it is. Glyn Johns who worked closely with The Presidents from 1958 produced this, his first single, and passed it to Decca who signed the band immediately and prepared for its release. But then it got passed to the Tremeloes who cut it and released it forcing The Presidents to relegate their version to the B side of their single. The Tremeloes got to number 8 in the UK charts. Who knows what might have been in store for The Presidents?

  • I used to go to the red lion in sutton on a regular basis in the mid 60's to watch the presidents. They also supported the rolling stones at epsom baths in 65. Does anyone remember a young jeff beck in the night shift?

  • A few yes, but I think I know what you're referring to. lol

  • Oh well - you were in good company - think of any other daft decisions made by Decca?????

  • Kudos to The Presidents. This has to be the best rendition ever of this classic number.
