Time to fix the lackluster heat and find the missing high fan speed in this car.

  • Hey pal,

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue and my defroster blower squeals when the temperature setting is between 3 and 5 and on fan speed between Medium and High (3-5). Do you think the defroster fan has something stuck in it or is it the blower? Thanks. By the way, sweet car.

  • we had the opisit problem with our jaguar it would not col down so the motor got really hot

  • Don't feel bad Bill, I have scared myself so many freaking times honking the horn by accident it's not even funny. LOL!!

  • good to see you know what you going. keep up the good work.

  • It'll be a black boxy looking thing like the one in this video (although I had the cover off of it to work on it). There will be wires plugging into it. I can't tell you any more since I've never worked on a Pontiac and the module could be different.

Since all of the Buicks, Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles are similar, yours is probably in about the same place mine was, right above the fan and behind a weather shield.

You can get a new one wherever auto parts are sold.

  • The resistor will be probably be somewhere on the firewall. I don't know exactly where it would be on your Pontiac. You might ask a dealership mechanic (they'll probably tell you and print the info out for free) or find a *factory* service manual. The fan speed switch is usually pretty reliable

  • where is the resistor?? its a GM so it could be easy...? or could it also be the fanspeed switch??

  • The same fan is used for both A/C and heating. You have a bad resistor pack. Instead of using a multi-speed motor, most auto makers use a single speed motor and put a resistor in series with the motor to control the amount of voltage going to it. This in turn controls the speed at which the fan motor turns.

These resistors get hot (they're like heating elements) and can burn out. That is what has happened to some of yours, and when it does, you lose fan speeds. The new part is not expensive.
