The proof is in the pudding, as they say, and I wanted to let you all know that I'm serious about being prepared when on a night hike. There are many different, and many better ways to be prepared than what I'm showing you now, and I expect I will adopt many more and different preparedness items in to my system as I continue to learn. For now, I've done the best I can with what I have, and I recommend that you do that as well. When you enter the wilderness on a hike, and remove yourself from immediate help and conveniences that our society affords, make sure you do so prepared for the dangers - and wonders that you might find.

If you're curious about the Paracord wrap system I used, check out this video:

  • Good vid scout but did you say hubby? lol im pretty sure that means husband and wifey is wife.

  • @TactiKoolStuff Yeah, I think I meant to say "Honey".

  • a quick question on your Paracord Bracelet: Did you make it or did you purchase it ? if purchased from Whom/Where did you purchase it.?

second, any thoughts as to replacing the larger back -up light with say a Petzl Fuel headlamp?

  • @Penthraxxus A friend made it for me. It's based on the Trilobite Bar pattern - google it. I do bring a headlamp system now instead of just hand-held lights, yes; Fenix LD10 in a headband.

    Thanks for watching.

  • @airsoftst Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it... lol.

  • @airsoftst "nobody I know carries a gun" Maybe that's because they carry concealed and don't tell you they took it - like I do - like most hikers who carry guns do.

  • Man, I wish on boyscout hikes they would let me bring my 10mm glock 20..

  • 4mile hike, I take my iphone with me. But a nice video though

  • @TheLateBoyScout dude... that was totally a line from Alien vs Predator 1

  • Re: self-defense, in some parts of the world it is a legal requirement to be armed. It's quite closed-minded to laugh at him for carrying a weapon. You don't know a thing about his part of the world. Personally I think 9mm is a bit small for bear. 10mm is a common load.

Some people have mentioned dogs for defense. Be aware that in practice, unless they're trained bear/cat hunting dogs, they often retreat behind the owner (pack alpha) with the animal in pursuit.

  • Glock 21 carried here for protection from all sorts of hazards in most areas, but when on trips in bear country I carry a 6" stainless .454 Casull with tritium sites.

  • great stuff. as for not needing a fire arm on a four mile hike i found myself surrounded by a pack of wolves and had a run of my life the half mile back to camp where my rifle was sitting cause i was only a short distance away. it could have been a bear, or in the worst case a group of armed criminals who wont give you the opportunity to go back and get it. prepare, preserve protect...
