A short video showing Airey Neave's escape route over the Bridge of Sighs, along with a short pan around the Solitary Cells. For much more material on Colditz Castle, including many more videos, visit my website at www.virtualcolditz.com
my great Uncle Captain Ian Garrow was the commanding officer and pioneer of the escape route that Airey Neave used to get out of occupied Europe after his escape from Colditz. It has been said that Airey's assasination was a primary factor in the election of Margaret Thatcher.
Airey Neave and a Dutch officer, dressed in German uniform with cardboard badges, went through a corridor and a hole in the ceiling, down some stairs and into a guard room. The Dutch officer was chatting German and the guards came to attention, as the pair went out the gate to freedom.
Neave went on to become a member of parlament until he was murdered by an IRA car bomb.
