Disaster Preparedness: Protect your emergency radios and electronics equipment from a natural or manmade Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) event by using this simple yet very effective Faraday Cage that costs only about $15 dollars. A natural EMP can be caused by our Sun during a Solar Flare or a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) that is directed towards the Earth. A manmade EMP event is caused when a nuclear bomb is detonated at high altitude.

Interesting Information from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - Scale for Geomagnetic Storms:

Scale - G 5 Extreme:
Power systems: widespread voltage control problems and protective system problems can occur, some grid systems may experience complete collapse or blackouts. Transformers may experience damage.
Spacecraft operations: may experience extensive surface charging, problems with orientation, uplink/downlink and tracking satellites.
Other systems: pipeline currents can reach hundreds of amps, HF (high frequency) radio propagation may be impossible in many areas for one to two days, satellite navigation may be degraded for days, low-frequency radio navigation can be out for hours, and aurora has been seen as low as Florida and southern Texas (typically 40° geomagnetic lat.)**.

  • I just bought one of these at Lowes today, figuring it would be a perfect size for a Faraday Cage. Then I got online to see if anyone had made a video with it. You beat me to it! Great video! Very informative, and thanks for all the research you did. I've seen other trash can Faraday Cage videos, and they think they have to line with cardboard, etc. It's nice to know you don't need to. I may add insulation just to protect the contents from banging against each other in an earthquake.

  • @scottks5 Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comment.

  • That is absolutely amazing. Thanks for making the videos and sharing this information.. This is very useful knowledge.. Man... I love youtube!!! Thanks Bro!!!

  • @1TruPatriot You're welcome man...take care.

  • now he does know he just ruined his microwave right?

  • @XhoodpandaX Not at all...microwace still works great...I just heated up some morning soup and it's hot! :-)

  • This protection would work fine -- if you know in advance that there will be an EMP attack... the best concept is to have all of your BACKUP equipment always contained in a faraday cage, always protected, until AFTER an EMP event. Then, you have good equipment which can be used. Best regards, amateur radio operator, NW7US, Tomas

  • Thank you for posting the awesome information !

  • Great video....

  • Who would give this video a thumbs down? Perfect explanation and examples.

  • A big thumbs sir!

Great presentation. You answered many of my questions. I can't thank you enough for doing all that work and presenting it in such an easy to understand way!

  • @XhoodpandaX There shouldn't be any problems to the device since the microwaves are ultimately absorbed by the water.

  • Thank you very helpful

  • Added protection by coating the inside with Plastidip or Blue Magic rubber coating.

  • could someone tell me weather or not a space blanket (the shiny silver ones) will do the same as aluminum foil.

  • Good video!! I was wondering if you could protect a entire house. Maybe so application before the siding is installed.

  • Good vid. Thanks for taking the time to research & present this topic!
