Elizabeth Yeager (flute) and Kiyo Watanabe (organ) perform "Sonata for Ryuteki and Sho" by Alan Hovhaness at Floral Heights United Methodist Church, Wichita Falls, Texas, March 16, 2008, with images of Japan in 5 sections: 1) Spring - Cherry Blosssoms, 2) Summer - Fireworks, 3) Fall - Autumn Leaves, 4) Winter - Snow, and 5) Mount Fuji.
@LaughsLikeGirl That very much sounds like a western flute to me. The ryuteki tends to have a much sharper sound. That also doesn't sound like a real shou.

Is that an actual Ryuteki or is it a Western Flute?

Ah, yes. The scene in "The Cat Returns" where the Cat King's procession appears in Haru's neighborhood.
This is a lot like "gagaku", or ancient Japanese Imperial Court music.

thanks for posting this video! It kind of reminded me of the music in the movie Return of The Cats... or at least thats what I think it was the main character's name is Haru. It's Japanese... anyone else seen it?
