This Painting Problem Solver is in response to the following problems posted in the Art Clinic section of my main website -- www.artworkshopwithpaul.com

From Mary Briggs in the UK -- "My problem is creating shadows in bright sunlight on poeple and their clothing. This in acrylic."

From Carnellia Sammons in the USA -- "When beginning a painting, and doing the underpainting, is it better to underpaint with darker shadow colors, or lighter colors?"

"Painting with Light" is how Paul describes the process demonstrated in this fully narrated tutorial, filmed in real-time.

Watch as Paul uses a head and shoulders portrait to show how to work gradually in layers from dark to light, thereby demonstrating how the dark underlayers can be best exploited to maximise the forthcoming light layers and final super highlights.

Thus providing Mary with a solution to her problem in creating shadows in her figure painting and for Carnellia this will demonstrate the benefit of starting off with dark underpainting to achieve the shadow colours.

Painting Problem Solvers is a strand dedicated to providing solutions to queries posted by visitors either on to Paul Taggart's painting blog (Art Workshop With Paul Taggart) or on the Art Clinic in his main website 'Art Workshop With Paul'.
