USS Kitty Hawk

Miss Kitty, as she was sometimes called, took part in more combat missions in Vietnam than any other carrier, and in recent years participated in missions off Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Navy's last fossil-fueled aircraft carrier, the Kitty Hawk is being retired, moved from Pier 6 at the Bremerton Naval Station to the shipyard next door, where it will ultimately be decommissioned.

I am so glad to have seen more of the history of this wondeful ship which my dad had the honor to serve on! We just attended the decomissioning ceremony on Saturday and would LOVE to see more about that on here soon!! I feel so lucky and privileged to have been there with Dad for the ceremony. I sure hope she- the Kittyhawk- will be moved to North Carolina to be well preserved and stand as a museum for all to appreciate. Thanks so much for posting this clip!!

For some understanding of the 1972 race riot on this ship, read Gregory Freeman's book "Troubled Water." What happened, and the lack of strong command in suppressing it, as well as the lack of strong punishments afterward, were enough to make my head spin with anger. Unbelievable.

@hollitosis1976 I lived in on the Yokosuka Navy base for 3 years. It was a great experience to live beside the ones that protected us each day. When standing near the Kitty Hawk you feel so small.

I was on the Kitty Hawk when they had this race riot. Little does anyone know, that the riot started over a grilled cheese sandwich. The forward mess deck was the speed line for food like hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. On guy went thru and asked for two grilled cheese sandwichs. And he go them, since his friend was passing out the food. Next guy who was black also asked for two, and was told no. Next thing you know, punches were thrown and it turned into a riot thruout the ship. TRUE STORY!!
