the auto cars arent really vented it's more of a guard to keep rocks and other debris from damaging the vehicles inside. the holes in the outer shell let light in so loading and unloading crews can see what they are doing and work faster without moving a bunch of lights in and out of the cars

The autoracks are "vented" to reduce side wind-loading that can topple them over esp. when empty. It's not all that uncommon esp. in the wide-open windy spaces on the praires.

Yes it seems strange that a Box car used to transport vehicles should be ventilated. Does anyone know anything about the FEMA trains which are said to be converted box cars?

I like the first train, very cool
Why was one of the boxcars vented?

That car on the dimensional train is very similar to an autorack, which coincidentally is the what the second train is, and those side panels are all vented for whatever reason. I don't think there was anything in that car that required ventilation; that's the way the car is designed. Anybody else have an idea?
