This is a 9 minute extract from 8mm movie footage taken my father around 1948. The extract is from a 1¼-hour original film of Islay, Argyll, Scotland. The full film shows much of the villages of Port Wemyss and Portnahaven and it's people of that time as well as other parts of the island. There are scenes of people going about their daily lives -- the postman, the milkman, the farmer lad, men and horses working the fields, the lighthouse boatmen, fishermen and water collection from the local well (there was no plumbing in the houses back then).
In this extract I have focused on the village of Portnahaven.

  • where is Campbell Place? what a brilliant video

  • Thanks Dolan!

Good point... Campbell Place was fields back then I suppose.

  • Thats lovely, I was brought up in Portnahaven in the 70's-thanks for sharing this video

  • I'm glad you liked it! To me Portnahaven and Port Wemyss are very different places now. The old-timer locals are mostly long gone from my time there in the 60's and early 70's.

Have a look at the videos "People About" and you'll see some more. I'm posting a couple more videos up here tonight and tomorrow.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this, fascinating to watch! Nice touch at the end (no, I'm not giving it away, watch it to see it).

Interesting to see how little yet how much has changed over 60 years. At one point I spotted the Coastguard watchtower, which to my knowledge is now a holiday cottage. I assume it was still in its original use back in 1948.

  • Glad you liked it!

The fella who now owns the Coast Guard Station was in touch with me the past week - the property is available for rent and looks very comfortable. I can't help but think what amazing views it would have.

  • Wow, how wonderful to have this footage that your father took, thank you for sharing it here on YouTube.

  • great film.

my granny and great aunts were born and brought up here my granny is still in king street and shes 90. my great aunt was headmistress at the school.

we spent lots of summers there when i was wee.

  • Lovely.

  • The music on this clip is familiar to me. My parents had a recording of Jascha Heifetz playing the lead violin. It's SCOTTISH FANTASY by, I think Bruch. Who is performing this version?

I'm drawn to this clip for another reason. My last name is Wemyss. Nobody here knows it's pronounced "Weemz."
