In this week's series on European holiday sweets,we find out how the Italian Christmas favorite panettone is baked today. It's not that difficult as the 500-year-old recipe doesn't require many ingredients - but you need some patience because it takes 24 hours until it's ready to serve.

  • Panettone is crack. My Peruvian mother supplies me with it.

  • @Torahboy1 I'm Italian and I wouldn't kill you! Your recipe sounds delicious!

  • You know, the Italians would kill me for saying this, but Panettone makes the best EVER bread and butter pudding!

All you do, is slice the cake about an inch and a half thick, then arrange the pieces roughly into an earthenware dish. Mix up a pint or so of double cream with a dozen egg yokes. Pour the cream mixture into the dish, and squish the cake a little, so it soaks up the cream. Place tin foil over the top, to prevent burning, then put into a medium oven until the cream mixture sets.

  • im from peru and here is an important part of the christmas dinner

  • @RobertsDigital $6.00-$8.00 per box in the supermarkets in my side of San Francisco. (each box is roughly the size of a bucket of KFC/Kentucky Fried Chicken).

Although I'm not Italian, I can't imagine a holiday season going by without enjoying a panettone and a hot beverage with my family!

  • @giadalover 100 dollars in the US???

In Europe you can buy is for 5 bucks at any supermarket and it is so tiresome to eat. Many Italians get annoyed when you give them panettone for christmas because they are so tired of it.

Its part of the italian culture but if you want to annoy an italian at christmas just buy him a panettone. In italy you can recieve up to 10 panettone in a single christmas alone from different people..

  • eating panettone with drinking hot chocolate is a classic

  • @beesleeper i dont know Italian, but i know spanish, and it sounds right, i understood what you wrote in Italian, i guess Italian and Spanish are more similar than i knew...

  • so it will cost you 100$ U.S for one of them,it better be so good

  • panettone is a huge holiday tradition in Peru
