99 Galant 4G64.. Rod Knock?.. Balance shaft knock?.. Timing belt skip?

It appears to be coming from the cylinder closest to the timing belt cover.
You can feel it through the valve cover with your hand (you can really hear it if you put a screwdriver to your ear on that part of the valve cover)
It seems to be in sync with the rocker arm movement. Lash adjusters have been changed with no difference in the sound.. however i did discover a broken balance shaft belt.. could it have made the timing belt skip a tooth? Timing marks seemed to line up (minus the balance shaft gear, obviously) maybe i missed it being off by that little?
Also, the balance shaft gear seems pretty impossible to turn by hand

its not the belt its the valve broken time to get a new eagine my galant just been fixed good luck dude

mate your belt is toast and you will need to tear down the engine and start from scratch

im also working on that problem with my 03 galant..... its not the timing belt, its not coming from the top of the engine. it sounds more like the noise is coming from the around the crankshaft... maybe balance shaft? idk. i guess illl change out the balance shaft next and see what happens

Sounds like you have a balance shaft bearing that failed. That can cause metal particles in your oil which will or already has worn out the rest of your bearings.
