Another smiths song that caused morrissey some early trouble ...People thinking its about pedophilia and the nightmares within that mentality . But with the sound of johnnys guitar work ..makes this more or less a tragic and thought provoking tale of innocence lost from both the child and the unnamed and sexless caregiver . Though he speaks of "mother " at the end as a plea . This song poetically describes a certain injustice done within the sanction of being a frightened child and parent .

the guitar has some magical element about it which just entwines perfectly with the way he doesn't so much sing as chant. This makes this for me probably the best song ever and I've been listening to it for 20 odd years

@WesleyDieson77 Also could mean we are naturally lured into having children (i.e., sex), and don't bother to get to know them. "Had" a child could mean "conceiving" rather than molesting. I think you can project whatever you want onto the song.
