This British clarinetist was born Bernard Stanley Bilk and he earned the nickname "Acker" from a slang word in Somerset for "friend" or "mate". His composition and recording of "Stranger On The Shore" vaulted Acker to fame and fortune in April of 1962 as it went to #1 in both Britain and the US. In fact, this recording stayed on the UK charts for an astonishing 55 weeks, and is one of the prettiest instrumentals ever recorded in pop history.
Memories of immigrating to Australia from the UK - 1963 - across the Indian Ocean!
