Human nature is responsible for these things, and it just expresses itself through different avenues. Any movement is innocuous until it rises to the top of a power vacuum, then all these atrocities you mention begin to manifest. Sometimes it's politics, sometimes religion. But where religion is divorced from power, it is a force for great good. Conversely, ANY system at the top of the power pyramid will be oppressive and murderous.
