You're rats are lovely :) But just for debate's sake, just because she lived a long, illness free life, it doesn't mean that an overweight rat is a healthy one. She was just lucky. It's like one obese human living to a ripe old age and you saying "See! being fat is fine!". It's not, and you can't generalise- I'd say your rat was at increased risk of health problems and I wouldn't encourage that kind of lifestyle for anyone.

You rats are bonny little things.
We once had two sister rates, DeNiro and Ms Pink. DeNiro had a bowel problem from birth, but we took her anyway and lead a very happy life, until the bowel problem got worse and prevented her body from absorbing nutrients. Our one happy and plump little ratty because so frail and just so unlike her. Her sister Ms Pink missed her so much, and although she once resembled more Audrey Hepburn, she put on weight and became more of a Monroe.

Lola is such a cute rat, I have a cat who is quite chubby and it annoys me when people say nasty comments about him, so I totally see why you wouldn't want people leaving nasty comments about her weight (:

omg is soooo fat!!!! so cute..
i agree w many of the posts. the rats r too heavy. rats r very similar to humans and if a human gets too fat we increase our risk for: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, sleep apnea, and a host of other serious illnesses. this is documented to b true regardless of species. i keep my rats very lean, and the oldest is over a year old and hasnt had any health probs yet. they r very cute, and obviously happy from being taken care of by such a loving owner. try what i do: use verbal praise, not treats

@tmc115 Lol @ your comments and everyone elses! Im honestly not bothered at what you think of my rats whether you think their thin or fat. There healthy so who cares and i am a VERY experienced rat owner and have owned 17 now. Also as a matter of a fact Lola lived way behond average age of a rat, didnt have one single health problem!!! She died after getting tumours and after her 3rd operation her body couldnt cope. NOTHING to do with weight what so ever

@tmc115 and i have a vet who specialises in small animals and not a single concern with the way i care for my animals!!! Thanks for your comments though :) Once youve owned many different kinds of rats you will know they all vary in size and shape. No rat will EVER be the same. All one of a kind and i wouldnt have it any other way :D
