The thermal paste for your first test was only spread over the center of the cpu, to make maximal heat transfer it would have needed to be spread entirely across. Since the areas without thermal could have had, and most likely did have, large air pockets. The transfer from your first test was not entirely efficient. It would have been nice to see a thermal paste footprint after lapping. Most likely reapplying your thermal paste to cover the entire cpu before lapping would have lowered temp.

all theese tests, i just play flight sim x for a few hours on max settings and see if my cpu is still mainly intact

@dpfernan alright thanks, im like stupidly used to my usuial 600-> 2000 for headlight restoration lol

I'm buying a second hand Q9450 which is lapped. Do CPU's break easily? It's a gamble, but if the CPU works fine it's a nice addition.

@ApSykesThewolf you need to move slowly up the grit ladder or you will just be wasting your time at 2000 grit
-
OH MY GOD, that's even shiner than how i was able to get, do we really have to use lower grit to higher? i used 600 -> 800 -> 2000 grit

@SyLoWNiNe My mind just exploded because it runs on AMD and needs an i7.
what for program do you use?

@hasmo151 I use prime95 to stress the CPU. i use realtemp for monitoring the temperature. at the time i used the AI suite for monitoring as well. I also like superPI to test CPU speed and MSI afterburner for GPU monitoring

any time i've ever touched a cpu, i've handled it like a stick of dynamite so actually rubbing sand paper on it blows my mind...

@FlossBandit Hey, I still do that :) video cards, memory, i try not to handle them to much. For the lapping i started with a cpu cooler just to get the feel for it. It was a pretty nerve wrecking first boot :)

what happens if you lap only till you expose the copper and stop there?

@braianascua Hello, at that point it may still not yet be perfectly flat, which is what you want to aim for. This will give you the best contact to you CPU cooler
