Students at E.E. Waddell High School feel like they are in the fight of their lives. They are rallying to keep their school open, and they are hoping to be heard.
"We've only been open 10 years. How can they shut us down? I know I'm a senior, but it's not just me. It's 10 years of Waddell. Kids coming up won't have a school to come back to," said Ryan Herbin, senior class president.
Herbin says the school has made a difference in his life. He is on the football, track and basketball teams, and would like to attend Davidson in the fall.
At the school's PTSA meeting, parents said they were shocked that Waddell could close. They point to the schools improved academic performance, improved athletic performance and growing enrollment.
Waddell has also increased the percentage of students who are testing on grade level. Two years ago, 50 percent tested on grade level. Today, that number has increased by 20 percent, according to teachers at the school.
The students say those are the reasons they'll keep fighting. Many, like senior David Archila, believe their nationally-recognized science programs have changed their lives.
"I really care about my school," he said. "I'd like more people to experience what I've experienced."
Archila is from Honduras. He speaks both English and Spanish. He came to the meeting Tuesday night with friends, to show his support. He lights up when he talks about his love of science and Waddell's science programs.
"We go to other states and learn about technology of the future. I think it's better to save the school," he said.
Parents say their toughest job is still ahead. They plan to mobilize and attend CMS meetings on the school closings and reassignments. They are hoping that they'll be heard.
PLEASE CLOSE WADDEL
