- Jean Jacques Machado is one of the five Machado brothers, including Carlos, Roger, Rigan and John, renowned for their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) skills. Nephews of BJJ co-founder and Master Carlos Gracie, the brothers learned the martial art from an early age.
"Champion" is a relative concept and quite possibly te most overused term in martial arts. But if there is one man who deserves that title on many different levels, it's Jean Jacques Machado.
Machado was born with a malformed left hand and since he was a member of a very athletic and famous family his mother was really concerned and afraid that Jean Jacques will not be able to keep up with his brothers and cousins and would never be accepted as part of the family. But Carlos Gracie (his uncle and Cofounder-master of Brazilian Jiujitsu) had no such concerns, he picked up a months old Machado baby with one hand lifted him on the air while he told his mother "Dont worry, someday he will become a champion." There exists a very famous picture of this precise moment (published in November 2004 issue of Grappling Magazine).
Machado is known for his grappling skills having won ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships in his weight division plus a runner up in the open division in 2001. He dominated the competitive arena of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in his native country, capturing every major title and competition award from 1982 through 1992.
In 1992 Jean Jacques arrived in the United States to continue his competitive success. Dominating the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scene both in the US and in international competition, Jean Jacques is one of the most admired and respected Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world today. - Leo "Leozinho" Vieira is one of the most technically gifted Brazilian Jiujitsu figther in the world. He is the eldest of 3 brothers, all of them accomplished BJJ Black Belts (Ricardo Vieira and Leandro Vieira).
He started training when he was just 6 years of age at the "Academia Romero Jacare" with the legendary BJJ coach Romero Cavalcanti.
In 1993 his Master Cavalcanti merged the "Romero Jacare" team with some of his former students and formed "Team Alliance", Leo competed for this new team for many years, receiving his Black Belt under the Alliance banner when he was 21 years old, by the hands of his master, after winning the historic first World Championships event ever as a Brown Belt (1996).
In Sao Paulo Leozinho trained under Fabio Gurgel at the Team Alliance HQ there, but in 2002 there was a small rebellion against the head coach Gurgel and Leozinho left the team together with most of the black belts that trained there. The argument was over the "Mundial" (World Championships) which occurred a week after the "Copa do Mundo" (World Cup). As the "Copa do Mundo" offered a good prize money to its competitors and the "Mundial" didn't, Leonardo and his team mates felt they should support this organization (CBJJO -- Confederação de Jiu Jitsu Olimpico) and compete in it, Gurgel however decided against it, as he felt that competing in the Cup was less prestigious then competing in the World Championship. The fighters went on to fight at the "Copa" and Gurgel banned them from the gym, and so Leozinho and the others formed another team, "Master Team" after a few problems with that team also, another team was formed, which was called "Brasa" (which is slang for "Brazil" but also means "Ember").
The Brasa Team went on for years and still exists today, but in 2008 Leo and his brothers decided to open another team in which they had more autonomy, this team they called Checkmat in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
