Eucharistic procession from Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, with background music sung by the Daughters of St. Paul ("O Sacrum Convivium," from the album "Adoration").
Translation of Latin hymn follows.
O Sacred Banquet,
in which Christ is consumed,
the memory of his passion is recalled,
the mind is filled with grace,
and a pledge of future glory is given to us.
Alleluia!
(Antiphon to the Magnificat, Liturgy of the Hours, Evening Prayer II of the Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord.)

  • isnt that technicaly Exposition of the Blessed Sacrement?

  • Exposition is "displaying" the Eucharist for adoration. The Blessing, where the Eucharist itself is raised in the sign of the Cross is "Benediction."

  • Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians adore the Eucharistic Jesus who renews his total self-giving to God for us in the Mass, and gives himself as "bread from heaven" in Holy Communion. As Pope John Paul wrote, "May our adoration never cease."

The final scene in the video is a special Eucharistic blessing called "Benediction" (Latin for "Blessing", but the word is generally limited to this kind of blessing with the Eucharist).

  • I'm not a catholic, but that music is very pretty! So what are they doing in the video?

  • There is a tradition that dates back to the 1300's of having a procession after a special Mass, carrying the Eucharist through the streets of the city. This is mainly done for the Feast of Corpus Christi (which is Latin for "Body of Christ" and refers to the Eucharist).

  • @singingsisters Thank you. what date is the Feast of Corpus Christi please ? does if float on the calendar, in sync with Easter, each year ?

  • @stybarrow In the U.S, Corpus Christi is celebrated two weeks after Pentecost; in the universal calendar, it is the Thursday after Trinity Sunday (three weeks after the Ascension).
