I made a duet between the two on Audacity. I know it's gappy in places, but Patti's version is slower so I had to cut out some instrumental bits. Also PLEASE do not mention Susan Boyle. She is great, but please respect the artists in this video. Any comments such as 'Susan Boyle brought me here' will be deleted.

  • Man I hate to be one of those people but here it goes

    1. It is not a great duet Ruthie totally out powers Patti.

    2. If great voice discipline means cover everything up with way to much vibrato

    3. It's ok to have idol's but superman beats batman every time.

    4. there's a reason this video has 1,012 views and Ruthie's has over 4 million!!!

    5. There's a reason Ruthie was invited to be Fantine in the tenth anniversary concert. She is just far and away better!

That's why it's called the dream cast.

  • The first one was my fault. Ruthie's recording was louder, so that's what it may sound like. And four is a bit off as well. The real reason Ruthie got so many was because hers was the first video listed after all the Susan Boyle ones, so that's the one the SuBo fans watched. I will agree Ruthie had more views than PAtti anyway.

  • great duet . They are both great in their own way. thanks for making the video.

  • That's ok, thanks for watching :)

  • I love Ruthie but I think i would have to go with Patti because she is my idol, But great video

  • Thank you!

  • I love Ruthie!!!!....but the pathos that Patti possesees in this song always amazes me. Patti has more pain, more sadness, and is more subtle. God knows she can belt shit out of this song ( see her sing Gypsy at the age of 59) but her choices are perfect. Once again ..I love Ruthie...but Patti it the epitome of fantine..

  • anyone who thinks that ruthie henshall, the domestic starlet career-less has-been, is better than anyone, is delusional.

  • Ruthie with the rough, scratchy voice and the inability to hit notes precisely and sustain them is classically trained? Is better vocally? Hello!!!

  • @mycosette01 There's something to be said though for the character that Patti brings to this song. Ruthie is just a great, classically trained singer singing a fantastic song; whereas, Patti IS Fantine. It doesn't matter that her voice isn't perfect. She reaches into your soul and touches you with the story of Fantine. With Ruthie I'm just constantly distracted by how perfect everything is delivered, and Fantine is perfect. There's more to musical theatre than hitting the notes.

  • Ruthie is such a powerful performer however if there is one thing that is definitive to Fantine's I dreamed a dream will always be Patti LuPone. She has given depth, misery and pain into the song (as what the character really conveyed in the novel). Merry Christmas everyone!

  • Ruthie is fantastic and is probably more vocally trained, BUT, Patti gives it more depth of soul. you can hear the pain in her voice more so than Ruthie's.

  • Rhuties voice is perfect. Susan Boyle, is admire bec.nobody thinks she can do it. It is odd to compare them! Patti sang it differently, she belongs to different generation. Their voice have different power or caliber..They are stars in different horizons.

Nevertheless, I prefer Rhutie. I like her show of emotions and switching of voice to convey emotions. :)

  • RUTHIE OWNNNNNS PATTI!!!

  • i love them both its not fair to say that 1 is better than the other.1st pattis on the original cast & is singing how its written, as im sure she was told. ruthie takes alot of liberties with the rhythm. also patti has control in voice esp at the start & has something to build up to at the end of the song. ruthie is overpowering patti in this because there's less difference in volume from the start to the end. so don't go dissing either of them, but respect them for the artists they are :P

  • Ruthie is the best. She is really the best Fantine of all. Seems to me that this is a fact. NOT an opinion.

  • Both of these women are amazing in their own ways... on the whole I prefer Ruthie's voice as it has more power and I agree there definately was a reason it was her whom was chosen to be in the DVD. Patti does sound more like a motherthough probably because her voice is much more older sounding. I would love to hear Ruthie sing this again now she is actually a mother and see if it would enhance her already stunning world class performance even more.
