Great lads. I worked for Fosbel, ceramic welding the ovens while they were still burning. I went by the nickname Johnny, some of them might remember. Really loved working in Wales.

Cheers mate, I worked on 15 different batteries in half a dozen countries from Ravenscraig to Siberia.
My favourite was the Grange at Port Talbot. It was the oldest in the UK but they made a mistake closing it.

This brought it all back to me!
Catching an oven needs great timing. If you start off too soon you're in big trouble! BIG TROUBLE!

Yes, you needed to know what you were doing. The regular lads made it look easy. It was when you got spare men in on cover that you had problems.Burning locos are "BIG TROUBLE". My father did this job for eighteen years, timing was essential.

Is this Monkton battery at Hebburn or Monkton battery near Barnsley?

This was the plant at Heburn/ Jarrow which closed in 1991. The plant near Barnsley which I believe is still in operation was pronounced the same but spelt Monckton.
