Here's a clip featuring Art Carney before he was Ed Norton. In this episode of the Morey Amsterdam Show, Art plays Newton the Waiter. I'm not sure what number episode this was, but since it was shown on the DuMont network, it aired sometime in 1948. Throughout it's original run, Art Carney appeared in over 70 episodes.

Much of DuMont's programming was dumped after it's demise, and only a few episodes of the Morey Amsterdam Show survived. Sad.

  • @fromthesidelines I think most of what I knew about Art's appearance on this show was put in the description. I didn't know specifically that Morey was at CBS first and then moved to DuMont, or the name changes.

  • You mean you didn't know about this? I'm surprised....but thank you.

  • @fromthesidelines Very informative. Thanks for your comment!

  • Art Carney originally appeared on Morey Amsterdam's 1948-'49 CBS radio and TV shows as "Charlie the Doorman" (same character). When Morey moved to DuMont in the summer of '49, he couldn't use the names of the characters and the fictional night club he appeared in {"The Golden Goose Cafe"} from his CBS show- so, "Charlie" became "Newton", and the "Golden Goose" became "The Silver Swan Cafe". These "corny" routines, and their early work on live TV, are what made Art and Morey "stars" later on....
