an American singer who appeared in 19 musical films during the 1930s and 1940s, as well as in opera and on the concert stage, radio, television, and in nightclubs. Although he was a classically trained baritone, he is best remembered for the eight films in which he costarred with soprano Jeanette MacDonald.

During his 40-year career, he earned three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (one each for film, recording, and radio), left his footprints in the wet cement at Grauman's Chinese Theater, earned three Gold records, and was invited to sing at the third inauguration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He also introduced millions of young Americans to classical music and inspired many of them to pursue a musical career.

  • Jeanette Macdonald: The looks, the voice, the talent.....that combination only comes along once every hundred years. There is no one in Hollywood of equal stature and talent today...sad.

  • Jeanette and Nelson both sang at Jean Harlow`s funeral. Jeanette was so overcome with grief that she could not sing the song without breaking down in tears. Nelson finished the song alone with his arm around Jeanette. Jean loved Nelson and Jeanette. "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life" and "indian Love Call" were her favorite songs. Lorraine

  • Being a huge fan of Jeanette And Nelson..I followed them from a very early age..They were magic together on screen from the first time they met...They appeared separate in a few movies but it wasnt the same....Tho Phantom of the opera was excellent..Off screen their love was a triangle an problems...But I believe they were soul mates....

  • Nelson Eddy sucked; he was no Lawrence Tibbett; he wasn't even close.

Also, if you see the clip that was the basis for this, he was pretty fat, too.

Jeannette Macdonald, on the other hand, could sing and even act, too; her sister was "Grandmama" on The Addams Family tv show.

  • I didn't know it was song at Jean Harlow's funeral. How sweet and sad at the same time. All versions of this song are beautiful.

  • @9TheMajor - If this is correct was it a clash of egos? What a shame that this sort of thing enters into relationships among we humans! Still, they hide it pretty well if what you say is kosher.

  • awesome

  • for me-I can hear my grandad now stood in the kitchen with his face foamed up cutthroat in hand singing this with all the emotion of the singers themselves. He never cut himself shaving once!

  • I love this version...of course, being younger, I first heard this song while watching Mel Brook's 1970's comedy "Young Frankenstein" where Madeline Kahn hilariously sing this song during her orgasm while having sex with Frankenstein !

  • @9TheMajor This is what Hollywood and Louis B. Mayer wanted you to believe...Read the biography of Jeanette and Nelson by Ms. Rich to get the real story.
