Leaked from the secretive Ryhope Archive, this fragment of 8mm film from April 1935 apparently shows several anomalous structures (geistzones) in the heart of Ryhope Wood. The cameraman and the provenance of the film are not known.

  • Fake, obviously.. You couldn't have moved the camera like that in the 30's.. Get these fake films off the net or atleast name them right. =(

  • @jarimt Yes, obviously a fake. Or, more accurately, a work of fiction. Ryhope Wood does not exist outside the Mythago Wood cycle of novels by the late Robert Holdstock.

  • Bearing in mind the slowness of films available in 1935 and the poor light transmission of existing lenses, I would have expected the footage to be rather on the underexposed side, especially in the shady woods and inside the abandoned structures. Really, the darker you make this film, the better (spookier) the effect. Also, there would have been more lens flare, since there was no multicoating yet. Very nicely made, though.

  • Thanks for your comments. Points noted for future use. This was video footage I took in the little-known Hackfall, North Yorkshire, in 1994. It was not intended as a Holdstock tribute at the time, though I always thought Hackfall would make a good Ryhope. I edited this together one night with some very basic ageing effects. I was pleased enough with the result to post it as a tribute, though of course a lot more work is necessary to make it 100% convincing. Thanks again.

  • One of the most underrated writers. Holdstock was super badass.

  • I didn't realize Mr. Holdstock died! love his work. was his merlin work finished? iron grail, keltika et al?

re the film; best way to get an 8 mm effect, is to use an old 8 mm!lol

    rip Robert

  • Well done, I enjoyed both the spooky ambient sounds and the use of camera.

  • @petercrump Happy to be of assistance.

  • Also most a year now with Holdstock . RIP Robert.
