This Sea Fury raced in Reno, then sold to a member of Pink Floyd. It was checking out for its flight to England. Engine iced up & quit over the Atlantic, but after decending re-started and made it. Heard it may have crashed, don't know it's status today.

  • Great video.

The Fury hasn't crashed! It made it to the UK and flew here for a few years before it returned to the USA.

It now flies as 'September Fury'.

  • Thanks for the update info! Must also relay a retraction. This Sea Fury I was informed, was Not bought by a member of Pink Floyd back then. A P-51 Mustang, based at this same air port at the same time, was reported bought by a member of the band. This was a hearsay report back then. Apoligies for the misidenty mixup or if any of this was only rumour. But glad this Fury did not crash and flys on. Thanks again.

  • It's definitely a Centaurus. The five bladed prop and original cowl give it away...as soon as it fires you can hear the classic sleevless Bristol sound...all exhaust and no 'tappeting' - much like the Hercules at idle. The Hercules never sounded this aggresive though...lovely fighter.

  • Yes, you are right, this engine runs clockwise, while the original Centaurus turns anticklockwise.

  • When Great Britain was still great....

  • @7arsehle6 i,m sure it was owned by spencer flack in uk,saw it on show circuit a few times

    Thanks

  • @albatrosh177

no mate this is a Centaurus. at (1:19) it makes the classic 'galloping' sound of all Bristol's Sleeve Valve engines...Hercules would also do it.

  • What amazes me about the Centaurus and it's smaller siblings is how reliable they are, they have more moving parts than a bloody Rube Goldberg creation.

  • you cannot beat the sound of the Centaurus sleeve valve radial! 53 litres and a tad over 3000bhp! the american double Wasp & P&W R3350 are awesome but not in the same league as the Bristol...fastest single piston engined fighter i beleive

  • A five bladed Rotol prop....anti-clockwise turn....smooth idle..........i was around The Saunder's family TT20 flights at Chino in '78-'79 and the Centaurus they had was much smoother sounding than this one in the video. Very brash sounding....for a Centaurus......sounds like a Wright R-3350 radial.....maybe, just maybe they found an oddbell anti-clockwise turning unit and adapted a five-bladed prop/hub to the new engine...

  • juzzi07 is correct, it is a centaurus. The big block v8 sound gives it away if nothing else.

  • If this is now "September Fury" then it has been ruined, it now has a custom built Wright R-3350 engine, had it's wings clipped and canopy/cockpit redesigned. It's currently for sale with Courtesy Aircraft Sales at $950,000.
