The LTTE targets Islam devotees attending the national Milad-Un-Nabi celebration at a Mosque at Godapitiaya in Akuressa. 14 people were killed in this attack.


Parliamentarians were arriving at the Jumma Mosque at Godapitiya in Akuressa this morning when a suicide attack was launched at the premises. Military Spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said the bomber had come on a push cycle and triggered the explosion. Our Colombo reporter Ajith Dhammika Nanayakkara was also at the location to cover the ceremony. The video footage was recorded from his camera.
Ministers Pandu Bandaranaike, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, A.H.M. Fowzie, Mahinda Wijesekera, Chandrasiri Gajadeera and Amir Ali were the Chief Guests. The ruthless attack was unleashed while they were walking towards the venue.Among the dead were Deputy Chairman of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Upali Sarachchandra, Deputy Chairman of the Kamburupitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Thilak Dhammika Wijesekera, Chairman of the Devinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha Linton Abeydheera and Kapila Hettiarachchi Coordinating Secretary of Minister Gajadeera. The injured have been admitted to the Matara Hospital. A team of specialists was airlifted to Matara at the behest of the President to undertake treatment. Minister Mahinda Wijesekera, Southern Provincial Councillor Manoj Sirisena and former Southern Chief Minister H.G. Sirisena were airlifted to Colombo and admitted to the National Hospital.
