Here's a traditional dance from Upper Austria, called "Auf und ab", "Up And Down". It is played by Rudolf Lughofer, the reinitiator of Austrian bagpipe music, on a set of Austro-Bohemian pipes (called "Bock" in German, meaning "buck") made by master Pavel Cip from Moravia. The scale of the chanter is c'-e'-f'-g'-a'-bb'-c''-d'', the drone sounds F, both use single beating reeds. The bag is made of German Shepherd Dog.

I (Michael Vereno) am playing fiddle with a string tied around the neck, thus altering the tuning from g-d'-a'-e'' to bb-f'-c'-g''. Tuned this way, the fiddle can be more easily played in B flat and F.

This is a style of music that was very common throughout Austria and Bohemia until the 19th century.

This was recorded on 08-11-07 in Riidaja, Estonia, at a celebration of the Estonian bagpipe maker Ants Taul.

  • Lovely stuff.

  • Gosh! You're a talented young man!

  • Und Geige spielt Herr Vereno auch, nicht nur den Dudelsack! - Respekt entbietet ein gewisser Schwarz-Gelber, der über Melodica und Kammblasen nie hinausgekommen ist.
